Welcome to the Western Plains Weatherford Genealogical Society and the Western Oklahoma History Center

The WPWGS has a mission to preserve the past for Genealogy researchers and proud to celebrate our 30th year in 2012. The WPWGS has a collection of over 800 rolls of microfilm and over 50,000 obituaries from early newspaper records dated 1901 to present. We updated the Custer County Cemetery records and publish them in our "Gateways To The Past" Cemetery Book.  Our library holdings also consist of many family and area history books, along with a large collection of state resources and other research tools to aid you in your family history researching. The WOHC maintains the Historical Blair Log Cabin and the one room Cedar Schoolhouse and has many museum artifacts that focus on military, early schools and womens history related items that are displayed in the Cedar Schoolhouse during our exhibits during the year. Join us in preserving the past for future researchers to explore.

Cedar Schoolhouse

Cedar schoolhouse

The one room Cedar Schoolhouse District 65, was used for many years by area students. The School was located north east of town between Weatherford and Hydro and the last class was held in 1953. Later it was used as a Church then sat empty for many years before it was donated to the Western Oklahoma Historical Center, Inc. and moved into town in 2000. The school received some tender loving care and open house was held in March 2004.

The Blair Log Cabin

In April of 1892, William Blair made the run into the Cheyenne Arapaho territory and filed a claim on a quarter section southeast of what later became Weatherford now occupied by the Kendall House, Econo Lodge and Little Mexico Restaurant. He found a log cabin on the bank of a canyon about 200 yards south of what later became Highway 66, east of Little Mexico Restaurant. He did not know who built the cabin, but thought it must have been 10-15 years earlier by early day trappers.
